A dark, single origin chocolate made with fine cocoa from the south of Peru. Cocoa beans from Quinacho made it to the top 10 in Salon du Chocolat’s “Cocoa of Excellence” awards in Paris. The Quinacho cocoa bean is acidic but also fruity and very chocolatey. Its notes of terroir hail from the incredibly beautiful Apurimac Valley, which is embedded in a sleepy canyon, far from modern civilization. We transform these high-quality Quinacho beans into a high percentage chocolate that will take your palate on an exciting journey.
The Apurimac Valley is breathtakingly beautiful, but growing cocoa there is a bit of a challenge. Organic bean cultivation in this region requires a lot of intense work and very specific know-how. The nearest large city is a 12-hour car (or boat) ride away. Despite that, El Quinacho’s cocoa farmers, 560 families in total, have been working hard to produce the best possible cocoa and sell it at an adequate price since their cooperative was founded in 1970.
El Quinacho focuses on fine, high quality cocoa and coffee, and all of it is organic. The annual yield is relatively low, which makes it even more important for these farmers to trade at a fair price. The remote Apurimac Valley used to be a coca grower’s paradise, but today, El Quinacho’s farmers want to cultivate cocoa legally and are delighted that Josef Zotter pays good money for good quality.
